چکیده

The power spectrum (PS) of mass density fluctuations, independent of “biasing”, is estimated from the Mark III catalog of peculiar velocities using Bayesian statistics. A parametric model is assumed for the PS, and the free parameters are determined by maximizing the probability of the model given the data. The method has been tested using detailed mock catalogs. It has been applied to generalized CDM models with and without COBE normalization. The robust result for all the models is a relatively high PS, with P (k)Ω = (4.8 ± 1.5) × 10 (hMpc) at k = 0.1hMpc. An extrapolation to smaller scales using the different CDM models yields σ8Ω 0.6 = 0.88 ± 0.15. The peak is constrained to the range 0.025 ≤ k ≤ 0.06hMpc. These results are consistent with a direct computation of the PS (Kolatt & Dekel 1996). When compared to galaxy-density surveys, the implied values for β (≡ Ω/b) are of order unity to within 25%. The parameters of the COBE-normalized, flat CDM model are confined by a 90% likelihood contour of the sort Ωh50 μ n = 0.8 ± 0.2, where μ = 1.3 and ν = 3.4, 2.0 for models with and without tensor fluctuations respectively. For open CDM the powers are μ = 0.95 and ν = 1.4 (no tensor fluctuations). A Γ-shape model free of COBE normalization yields only a weak constraint: Γ = 0.4± 0.2. Large-scale Mass Power Spectrum from Peculiar Velocities

This is a brief progress report on a long-term collaborative project to measure the power spectrum (PS) of mass density fluctuations from the Mark III and the SFI catalogs of peculiar velocities. 2 The PS is estimated by applying maximum likelihood analysis, using generalized CDM models with and without COBE normalization. The application to both catalogs yields fairly similar results for the P...

Optimal Moments for Velocity Fields Analysis

We describe a new method of overcoming problems inherent in peculiar velocity surveys by using data compression as a filter with which to separate large–scale, linear flows from small– scale noise that biases the results systematically. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using realistic catalogs of galaxy velocities drawn from N–body simulations. Our tests show that a likelihood ana...

Power Spectrum of Cosmic Momentum Field Measured from the Sfi Galaxy Sample

We have measured the cosmic momentum power spectrum from the peculiar velocities of galaxies in the SFI sample. The SFI catalog contains field spiral galaxies with radial peculiar velocities derived from the I-band Tully-Fisher relation. As a natural measure of the large-scale peculiar velocity field, we use the cosmic momentum field that is defined as the peculiar velocity field weighted by lo...

Cosmic Data Fusion

We compare and combine likelihood functions of the cos-mological parameters Ω m , h and σ 8 from the CMB, type Ia supernovae and from probes of large scale structure. We include the recent results from the CMB experiments BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-1. Our analysis assumes a flat ΛCDM cosmology with a scale-invariant adiabatic initial power spectrum. First we consider three data sets that directly pro...

Optimal Moments for the Analysis of Peculiar Velocity Surveys II: Testing

Analyses of peculiar velocity surveys face several challenges, including low signal–to–noise in individual velocity measurements and the presence of small– scale, nonlinear flows. This is the second in a series of papers in which we describe a new method of overcoming these problems by using data compression as a filter with which to separate large–scale, linear flows from small–scale noise tha...
